Therma-Tru Impact Garage Doors: The Boca Raton Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Therma-Tru-compatible impact garage doors in Boca Raton, with typical installed prices running $2,800-$4,600 depending on door size, wind-load rating, and whether the existing frame needs replacement. Most Therma-Tru impact-rated panels and hardware ship within 48 hours, and we carry common torsion springs, rollers, and bottom weatherseals on our trucks for same-day service. Most owners discover a problem when the door hangs crooked, makes a grinding pull, or fails to latch after a storm - often because the impact-rated glazing package has added 40-60 pounds to a door that was already working hard in Boca Raton’s salt air.

Which Therma-Tru Models This Applies To

Therma-Tru’s impact-rated garage door program centers on the Impact-Resistant Fiberglass series and select Classic-Craft and Smooth-Star lines engineered for HVHZ (High Velocity Hurricane Zone) compliance. The critical identifier is the wind-load sticker, usually found on the interior top edge of the door or the track header: look for a Miami-Dade or Florida Product Approval number beginning with FL or NOA, plus a design pressure rating (typically +50/-50 psf or higher for Boca Raton’s 170 mph wind speed map).

Parts compatibility breaks down by vintage. Pre-2020 Therma-Tru impact doors used 2-inch track with .075-gauge steel and proprietary roller brackets; 2020 and later shifted to a reinforced 3-inch track system with heavier-duty hinges to accommodate the thicker impact glazing. The OEM torsion spring spec for a standard 16-by-7 impact door is .250 wire diameter by 33 inches, but we’ve measured .262 on post-2022 units - a half-size mismatch that will over-torque and fail early. We stock both gauges, plus the heavier-duty rollers (nylon-sealed, 6200Z bearing) that Therma-Tru specifies for the added door weight.

Aftermarket equivalents exist for most wear parts, and we use them where the spec matches exactly. For the spring system and the impact-rated glazing retainers, we default to OEM; the liability of a failed spring or flying glass fragment in a hurricane isn’t worth the savings. We are an independent service provider, not affiliated with Therma-Tru.

Signs Your Therma-Tru Impact Garage Door Is Failing

Signs Your Therma-Tru Impact Garage Door Is Failing
  • The door pulls heavy or stalls mid-cycle. Impact glazing adds significant weight, and when torsion springs lose tension - typically 8-12 years in Boca Raton’s coastal humidity, sooner if the springs were never re-torqued after installation - the opener strains and the door drags. We measure spring tension with a winding bar and calibrated scale; anything below 85 percent of spec gets replaced.
  • Visible rust weeping from the bottom of the door or frame. Therma-Tru’s fiberglass skin resists corrosion, but the steel edge banding and bottom retainer are vulnerable to salt air infiltration, especially in oceanfront Boca Raton homes where garage doors face onshore flow. Once rust reaches the glazing retainer, the impact glass is no longer structurally secured.
  • Light visible around the door perimeter when closed. The bulb-type weatherseal on Therma-Tru impact doors compresses permanently after 5-7 years of summer heat and UV exposure. A failed seal isn’t just an energy loss; it’s a wind-driven rain entry point that can delaminate the bottom of the door during a storm.
  • Grinding or popping from the track during operation. The 6200Z bearings in Therma-Tru’s heavy-duty rollers seize when the factory grease dries out, which happens faster in Boca Raton’s garage environments where humidity cycles are extreme. A seized roller flat-spots and damages the track itself.
  • The door fails the “reverse test” or auto-reverses randomly. Impact doors are heavier, and when springs or rollers degrade, the opener’s force settings may be maxed out to compensate. This overrides safety sensors and creates a crushing hazard. We check force limits and sensor alignment on every service call; if the door is out of balance by more than 5 pounds, we correct the hardware before adjusting the opener.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Component Typical Range (Installed) Notes
Single torsion spring replacement $280-$420 Both springs replaced as a matched pair; includes winding, balance, and safety cable inspection
Full spring system (both springs, cables, drums) $520-$780 Required when cables show fraying or drum corrosion
Roller set (10 rollers, standard 16×7 door) $180-$260 Nylon-sealed 6200Z bearings; heavier spec for impact doors
Bottom weatherseal replacement $140-$200 Therma-Tru bulb-type or equivalent; includes retainer inspection
Impact-rated panel replacement (single 21″ section) $680-$1,100 Depends on glass package and skin texture match
Full door replacement (16×7, impact-rated) $2,800-$4,600 Includes frame, track, hardware, haul-away; price varies with wind-load rating and insulation

What drives the range: door width (wider doors need heavier springs and more rollers), wind-load rating (higher DP means thicker glazing and beefier hardware), and frame condition. If the rough opening has settled or the wood frame shows rot from prior leaks, we replace it - documented with photos, priced in the written scope before work starts. Every Therma-Tru part we install carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise under the Haven Standard: if it fails, we return and correct it at no charge. The written quote you receive is the measured survey document; the invoice matches it line for line.

There is one safe owner check: disconnect the opener (pull the red release handle), lift the door manually to waist height, and let go. If it drifts more than a few inches, the springs are out of balance. That’s the end of the DIY road.

Torsion springs store lethal energy. A standard Therma-Tru impact door spring for a 16-foot opening is wound to roughly 12,000 inch-pounds of torque. The winding bars can slip, the cone can fracture, and the result is emergency room, not savings. We have replaced springs where a homeowner’s bar slipped and damaged the header, the door, and the opener - turning a $340 repair into a full replacement. We don’t recommend it.

What you can do: photograph the wind-load sticker, measure the door width and height, and note whether the track is 2-inch or 3-inch. That information lets us bring the correct parts on the first trip. Call (561) 200-8592 and we’ll schedule a measured survey; the written price comes before any tool is lifted.
