There is one thing a homeowner can safely check: the weep holes at the sill. If they’re clogged with paint or debris, water backs up into the track and accelerates weatherstrip failure. A pipe cleaner and ten minutes will solve that.

Everything else carries risk that outweighs the savings. Removing a sash to access the balance assembly on an MG-100 requires releasing the tilt latches while supporting the full weight of the glass; the sash is heavier than it looks, and the balance is under residual tension that can snap the pivot bar into the jamb. For IG unit replacement, the unit must be measured to 1/16 inch, ordered with the correct spacer color and gas fill, and installed with setting blocks and edge clearance that vary by unit size.
